How to make a Reel on Instagram in 2026 (that actually gets reach)
By Arthikan · 15 June 2026
Instagram Reels are still the single fastest way to reach new followers in 2026 — but only if you get the first 1.5 seconds right. Here's the exact process our team uses when producing Reels for client accounts.
1. Start with the hook, not the shot
Before you touch a camera, write the first sentence. If someone couldn't hear the audio, would the on-screen text alone make them stop? If not, rewrite it.
Strong hook formats we use every week: bold contrarian claim ("Stop posting carousels"), numbered promise ("3 things nobody tells you about Meta Ads"), and pattern-break visual (a jump-cut, a prop, or a green screen).
2. Shoot vertical 9:16 in good light
Use your phone in 4K vertical. Natural window light beats every ring light we've tested. Keep the camera stable — a £15 tripod is enough.
3. Edit in Instagram, CapCut or InShot
Cut every dead beat. If a clip has more than half a second of silence, trim it. Add on-screen captions — 85% of Reels are watched with the sound off in the first pass.
4. Caption for SEO, not for likes
Instagram now indexes Reel captions for search. Include the phrase someone would search for ("how to make a reel", "meta ads for small business") in the first 125 characters.
Use 3–5 relevant hashtags. Anything more is a waste.
5. Publish, then boost the winners
Post at the time your audience is most active (check Insights). Give it 48 hours. If it beats your account average, boost it with £20–50 for 3 days — that's how you turn a good Reel into a growth event.
